Competitive Stakes Rising in European Natural Cosmetics Market

London – Slowing market growth rates and an influx of new entrants are raising competitive stakes in the European natural cosmetics market. Although outpacing the total cosmetics market, growth is far below the 20% plus growth rates observed in previous years.

AHPA Adopts Trade Requirement on Labeling of Undiluted Essential Oils Used Topically, Offered for Retail Sale

The American Herbal Products Association’s (AHPA) Board of Trustees recently adopted a trade requirement to support the safe-use and proper-identification of undiluted essential oils used topically and offered for retail sale.

The trade requirement, which AHPA members must come into compliance with by Jan. 9, 2010, requires that undiluted essential oils offered for retail sale and intended for topical use include all of the following information or statements on package labels:

Clarifications to Reg Needed to Make NOP Work for Personal Care Products, AHPA Says

SILVER SPRING, MD  – The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) suggests in comments submitted May 7 that a National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) committee consider adding several key points to a proposed recommendation that the National Organic Program (NOP) be amended to explicitly include cosmetics.

The proposed recommendation by the Board’s Certification, Accreditation and Compliance Committee (CACC) was a topic of discussion during an NOSB public meeting held May 4-6 in Washington, D.C. AHPA President Michael McGuffin presented the association’s comments before the NOSB on May 4.

In "IFRA Promotes Synthetic Ingredients in Fragrance", an article which first appeared on March 2, 2007 in Cosmetics Design-Europe, it was subsequently discovered on March 6, 2007, that a major rewrite had occurred that completely change the wording regarding the naturals vs. synthetics debate they are currently in with Cropwatch, an independent watchdog of the natural aromatics industry. Many of the IFRA "voluntary guidelines" have been adopted into law by the European Union, and the natural aromatics industry is concerned that this latest backpedaling on the conflict is a bad sign of journalistic manipulation to come.
