Soap Bars Cleaning Up Internationally

Grampian TV>> Bars of soap inspired by the shores of Shetland are causing a splash on the international markets.

An island-based company has signed a raft of deals that will take its products all over the world - barely a year after it began trading.

Sniffing the sweet smell of success, customers sampling the choice at the now internationally famous Shetland Soap Company.

After just over a year in business, the entrepreneurs behind the firm are cleaning up. They've got contracts as far and wide as Jenners in Edinburgh and Michigan in the US.

The cakes are cooked with traditional methods and their secret ingredient is part of the island itself - seaweed and loofah shreds cultivated from the shore can be found in some of the suds.

The company is a member opf the Community Opportunities for Participation in Enterprise programme, which provides jobs for disabled people on Shetland.

Management are hoping to increase the wholesale business to provide more supported work places:

With more products than Coronation Street has plotlines, this could be one long-running soap opera that, for once, has a very happy ending.
